Otters’ Raddysh reaches 100-point plateau

Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Taylor Raddysh of the Erie Otters has joined teammate Alex DeBrincat in the century club.

One of three Lightning prospects on the Otters roster, Raddysh scored his 38th goal of the season and pitched in with two assists to bring him to 100 points on the season as Erie lost a wild one in Niagara by a score of 9-7 on Sunday.

The Caledon Ont. native has been a front-line contributor with the Otters this season, spending much of his time on a line alongside DeBrincat and Arizona Coyotes first round pick Dylan Strome. He becomes the sixth player in Otters history to reach 100 points in a season.

Raddysh was the OHL’s Player of the Month for October and joined DeBrincat in sharing the honours for November. He played a key role in Team OHL’s success in the 2016 CIBC Canada/Russia Series, scoring twice and adding an assist in a 5-2 win over Team Russia in Hamilton.

After making a strong impression with Team OHL, Raddysh earned a spot on Canada’s National Junior Team, tying a Canadian World Junior record with four goals in one game. He finished the tournament with five goals, one assist and six points over seven contests as Canada came away with silver.

A second round (58th overall) pick by the Lightning last summer, Raddysh’s 100 points (38-62–100) place him second in OHL scoring. He leads the league in both assists (62) and plus/minus (plus-64).

Raddysh, who also recorded his 200th career OHL point on Sunday, was Erie’s first round (19th overall) pick in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midgets.

2017 NHL Draft prospect Gabe Vilardi (26, 27, 28) recorded a career-high five points, including his second hat-trick of the season as the Windsor Spitfires rolled to their third straight win, defeating visiting Sudbury 7-1. Marie holds a four point edge in the West Division. Jeremy Bracco (24), Julius Nattinen (10), Logan Brown (14) and Mikhail Sergachev (10) also scored for Windsor as the Spits outshot the Wolves 35-23 and went 2-for-3 on the power play. Ryan Valentini (17) scored Sudbury’s lone goal as the Wolves dropped their fourth straight game and now trail sixth place Ottawa by one point in the Eastern Conference. Vilardi’s five points are the most in a game by a Spitfire since Slater Doggett on Feb. 1, 2015 vs. Belleville.

OTTAWA 3 – BARRIE 1
The Ottawa 67’s climbed in the Eastern Conference standings as goaltender Leo Lazarev turned aside 31 shots in a 3-1 win over the visiting Barrie Colts. Ottawa’s second consecutive win featured goals from Mathieu Foget (7), Sasha Chmelevski (21) and Austen Keating (19), helping them leapfrog the Sudbury Wolves into sixth place. Ottawa was outshot 32-25 as Barrie’s Roy Radke (22) provided the lone goal for the Colts. Artur Tyanulin and Peter Stratis each had two assists for Ottawa. The 67’s sit on top of an Eastern Conference logjam that features four teams separated by four points with under seven games to go. NIAGARA 9 – ERIE 7
The Niagara IceDogs and Erie Otters combined for 16 goals in a wild one in St. Catharines. After being on the receiving end of a 10-1 beating by the Otters on Friday, the IceDogs had their revenge as 2017 NHL Draft prospect Kirill Maksimov (13, 14, 15) led the charge with his first OHL hat-trick. The Otters jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Niagara responded in a big way, scoring four straight goals in the opening half of the second period. DeBrincat becomes the OHL’s first 60-goal scorer since Erie’s Dane Fox netted 64 during the 2013-14 season. DeBrincat also extended his goal-scoring streak to 17 games, two shy of tying an OHL record. With three points, Taylor Raddysh joins DeBrincat as the second OHL player to reach 100 points this season. The IceDogs earn a big two points, climbing to two points ahead of ninth place North Bay for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

2017 NHL Draft prospect Nicolas Hague (18) scored with one second remaining in overtime to give the Mississauga Steelheads a thrilling 3-2 win over visiting Sarnia. Los Angeles Kings prospect Spencer Watson gathered an assist on the game winner as the Trout win their sixth straight game, capturing their 30th win of the season. Owen Tippett (42) and Jacob Cascagnette (19) also had Steelheads goals while overage netminder Matthew Mancina made 30 saves. The Sting gain a point in the hard-fought overtime loss, inching to within four points of seventh place Flint in the Western Conference. Jaden Lindo (20) and Drake Rymsha (30) had goals for Sarnia while St. Louis Blues prospect Jordan Kyrou recorded an assist to stretch his current point streak to an OHL-high 27 games for the 2016-17 season. Aidan Hughes made 26 saves in the loss as the Sting sit eight points ahead of ninth place Saginaw for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

HAMILTON 5 – NORTH BAY 4 – SO
Fifth-year veteran Michael Cramarossa scored the shootout winner as the Hamilton Bulldogs scored a 5-4 road win over the North Bay Battalion. Bulldogs blueliner Ben Gleason (5, 6) scored under two minutes apart in the second period to put Hamilton up 3-1, but the Troops would fight back to earn a much-needed point in the shootout loss. Will Bitten (20) and Zachary Jackson (3) also had goals for Hamilton while Kaden Fulcher made 28 saves in goal and denied all three shootout opponents he faced. Rookie forward Brett Hahkala (1) scored his first OHL goal for North Bay while Brad Chenier (7), Max Kislinger (6) and Steve Harland (25) also lit the lamp for the Battalion. The point keeps North Bay within two points of eighth place Niagara in the Eastern Conference. The Troops sit on the bottom of a four team logjam, with only three of those clubs being able to earn an Eastern Conference playoff berth when all is said and done. Hamilton meanwhile, has pulled into a fourth place tie with Kingston for home ice in what could potentially be a first round playoff series between the two clubs.

SAULT STE. MARIE 2 – KITCHENER 1
Boston Bruins prospect Zach Senyshyn (40, 41) scored twice, netting the winner with 2:09 left in the third period as the Soo Greyhounds won for the fifth time in the past six games. Senyshyn becomes the Hounds’ first back-to-back 40-goal scorer since Richard Uniacke in 1996 and 1997, helping his team rise to within three points of first place Erie in the Western Conference. Sault Ste. Marie rookie Matthew Villalta improved to 22-2-0-0 on the season with a 27-save performance, surrendering Kitchener’s lone goal on the afternoon off the stick of Joseph Garreffa (24). The Rangers lead seventh place Flint by three points in the Western Conference though the Firebirds hold a game in hand.

Otters’ Murdaca named Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week

TORONTO, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that goaltender Joseph Murdaca of the Erie Otters is the Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 19 after posting a 3-0-0-0 record including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 0.67 and save percentage of .964.
Murdaca was near perfect last week turning aside 54 of 56 shots faced backstopping Erie to a trio of victories as the Otters established a new franchise record for consecutive wins.  On Wednesday night he made 16 saves in a battle for first place atop the Midwest Division standings defeating the London Knights by a 5-1 score.  Over the weekend Murdaca got the best of his former team the Mississauga Steelheads in a home-and-home series beginning Friday night on the road with 19 saves in the 4-1 win, and Saturday at home with another 19 save performance as first star recording the 3-0 shutout.  The Otters are the OHL’s top team with 87 points courtesy of a 42-10-2-1 record and powered of late by 13-straight wins surpassing the club’s previous high of 11 set during the 2013-14 season.
An 18-year-old from Niagara Falls, ON, Murdaca was acquired by the Otters in December and has won each of his last 11 starts since January 13.  He carries an overall record of 11-1-0-1 with the Otters including two shutouts, a goals-against-average of 2.13, and save percentage of .905 in 13 appearances.  The sophomore is now the seventh goaltender to receive the league’s weekly award, while this marks the fifth time an Otters player has been recognized following Alex DeBrincat (3) and fellow netminder Troy Timpano.
Two other goaltenders were considered for the award this week as their clubs clinched OHL Playoff berths including Michael McNiven of the Owen Sound Attack and Jeremy Brodeur of the Oshawa Generals.  McNiven, a Montreal Canadiens prospect, went 2-0-0-1 with 72 saves and a shutout victory for a goals-against-average of 0.97 and save percentage of .960.  Brodeur stopped 82 shots and was a perfect 17/17 across two shootout victories carrying a goals-against-average of 2.77 and save percentage of .932.  Up front, Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat of the Otters led the league with seven points including three goals and four assists in three games eclipsing the century mark for points in a season a third straight time.

Spirit sign free agent forward D.J. Busdeker

SAGINAW, Mich. – Saginaw Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill announced Friday the signing of free agent forward D.J. Busdeker to a Standard Player Agreement and Education Package.

“We are pleased to announce the signing of D.J. Busdeker and are excited that he has committed to the Saginaw Spirit.” Said Drinkill.

“D.J. is a player that we have followed very closely over the last year with Compuware U16 and continuing into this season with Topeka of the NAHL. He has done nothing but produce at every level that he has played and has earned this opportunity with us. Adding a player of his character, work ethic, and drive to be a pro is infectious and we are looking forward to getting him started in our organization. By moving a player off our roster recently this opened up the opportunity to bring D.J. in, and allow him the opportunity to grow with our group of young players.”

Busdeker led the entire HPHL Under-16’s in 2015-16 with 42 points in 22 games for Detroit Compuware.

The native of Dexter, Michigan, Busdeker comes by way of the Topeka Roadrunners in the North American Hockey League where the rookie scored 13 points in just 12 games, ranking fourth on the team in scoring. An impressive feat for a just turned 17-year old on a team with an average age of 18 ½ years old. Busdeker is a late 1999 birthday, qualifying him for the 2018 NHL Draft.

“I am very much looking forward to making the jump to the Ontario Hockey League,” said the newly signed Spirit forward. “My goal is to one day play in the National Hockey League and I feel like the professional environment the Saginaw Spirit provides gives me the best opportunity to do so. My goal for this year is to come in and help the team any way I can. There are some great players here and I look forward to playing with them and learning from them.”

Busdeker will join his Spirit teammates this weekend to take on the Kitchener Rangers Saturday and the Guelph Storm Sunday.

Kitchener Rangers trade for rights to Blues' Fabbri at OHL trade deadline

"The Neutral Zone" Roster Report

Robby Fabbri
Kitchener (OHL) acquired the rights to Robby Fabbri just before Monday's Ontario Hockey League trade deadline.

The Rangers sent three draft picks to Guelph on Monday in exchange for the rights to Fabbri, who has firmly entrenched himself as a member of the NHL's St. Louis Blues this season. Guelph picked up the Rangers' third round pick in 2020, a conditional second round pick (originally from Saginaw) in 2018, and a conditional second round pick in 2019.

The 19-year-old Fabbri, the Blues' first-round pick in 2014, has 10 goals and four assists in 39 games so far in his rookie NHL campaign.
