Maple Leafs' Komarov suspended three games for elbowing

NEW YORK - Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov has been suspended for three games, without pay, for elbowing New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh during NHL game No. 860 in Toronto on Thursday, Feb. 18, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 18:58 of the first period. Komarov was assessed a match penalty for illegal check to the head.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Komarov will forfeit $47,580.66. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday for an incident with New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh during a game Thursday at Air Canada Centre.

The incident occurred at 18:58 of the first period. Komarov was assessed a match penalty for an illegal check to the head. McDonagh remained on the Rangers bench for the rest of the first period but did not return to the game.

New York won 4-2.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: elbowing/illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

Days after return, Rangers' McDonagh may once again be injured by Leafs' Komarov

New York Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh was injured in the team's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

McDonagh was hit in the jaw in the 1st period of the game.  

Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov delivered the blow. It was a pretty decisive decision for officials, as they gave Komarov a match penalty for illegal hit to the head. Komarov was ejected from the game.

McDonagh went to the Rangers bench after the incident but did not go out onto the ice for the second period.
