Ducks acquire Henrique, send Vatanen to Devils

Center Adam Henrique, forward Joe Blandisi and a third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft were acquired by the Anaheim Ducks in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on Thursday for defenseman Sami Vatanen and a conditional third-round draft pick.

Henrique, 27, has 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 24 games this season. He's second among Devils forwards with in average ice time at 18:15, including 2:54 per game on the penalty kill, also second among Devils forwards.

The Ducks are missing three centers because of injuries. Ryan Kesler has not played this season because of a hip injury; Ryan Getzlaf has missed 14 games because of facial injuries sustained Oct. 29, and could miss another month; and Rickard Rakell has been out the past three games because of an upper-body injury.

Anaheim next plays at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday (7 p.m. ET; FS-O, PRIME, NHL.TV).

Taken by the Devils with a third-round pick (No. 82) in the 2008 NHL Draft, Henrique has 257 points (122 goals, 135 assists) in 455 games.

His biggest moments with the Devils came during the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He scored in double-overtime in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals to eliminate the Florida Panthers, and his overtime goal in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final eliminated the New York Rangers and put the Devils into the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2003.

Henrique is in the fifth season of a six-year contract with an average annual value of $4 million, according to CapFriendly.com, and can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2018-19 season. If the Ducks sign Henrique to a contract prior to making their third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, that pick will be sent to the Devils. If the Ducks sign Henrique after using that selection, their third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft will be sent to the Devils. If Henrique does not re-sign with the Ducks, no pick will be traded.

Blandisi, 23, has 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in 19 games with Binghamton, the Devils' American Hockey League affiliate. He had nine points (three goals, six assists) in 27 games with the Devils last season.

Vatanen, 26, has four points (one goal, three assists) and a minus-6 rating in 15 games this season, and was third on the Ducks in average ice time at 21:06 per game. He missed the first seven games of the season recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He could make his Devils debut at the Colorado Avalanche on Friday (9 p.m. ET; ALT, MSG+ 2, NHL.TV).

"In acquiring Sami, we bring on a right shot, top-four defenseman who can play in all situations," Devils general manager Ray Shero said. "This move also gives us contract certainty on the back end for the next two-plus years. When acquiring a defenseman like Vatanen, you have to give back quality assets or players in return. That is the case in this situation with Adam and Joe. Adam has been a key member of our organization for nearly 10 years since he was drafted. His contributions both on and off the ice will always be appreciated by our organization and fans. For Joe, this is a great opportunity with a quality organization like Anaheim and I am happy for him."

Selected by the Ducks in the fourth round (No. 106) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Vatanen has 126 points (33 goals, 93 assists) in 280 games. He's in the second season of a four-year contract with an average annual value of $4.875 million, according to CapFriendly.com.

Oilers get Mike Cammalleri from Kings for Jussi Jokinen

By GREG BEACHAM
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings traded Mike Cammalleri to the Edmonton Oilers for Jussi Jokinen in a swap of veteran forwards on Tuesday night.

Cammalleri’s second career stint with the Kings lasted just 15 games. After signing a $1 million, one-year deal last summer to return to the club that drafted him in 2001, the 35-year-old veteran found himself stuck in a depth role early in the season, even sitting as a scratch for two games.

Cammalleri has three goals and four assists this season, his 15th NHL campaign. He has scored at least 19 goals in nine of those seasons.

“I don’t think he enjoyed the role that he was in, by any means,” said Kings general manager Rob Blake, who declined to say whether Cammalleri requested a trade. “I won’t tell you a lot about our conversation, but what I will tell you is we came to the conclusion that it wasn’t going the direction he wanted it to.”

The 34-year-old Jokinen has one assist in 14 games with Edmonton this season after signing a one-year deal as a free agent in July. The steady veteran is joining his seventh NHL franchise with the Kings, who expect to use him as a depth forward with faceoff skills and a solid two-way game.

“He’s been a very reliable player over his career, and I think that will bring a little stability to our lineup,” Blake said. “He can do a lot of different things for us.”

The Pacific Division-leading Kings are off to a strong start despite the injury absences of goal-scoring veteran Marian Gaborik and top scorer Jeff Carter, who will be out for several months while recovering from a cut on his leg.

Captain Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown are enjoying remarkable bounce-back offensive seasons while skating on Los Angeles’ top line along with speedy rookie Alex Iafallo, who surprised the team by winning an NHL roster spot in training camp and keeping it with steady play. Iafallo’s emergence contributed directly to Cammalleri’s reduced role, Blake said.

Iafallo and fellow youngster Adrian Kempe have secured regular roles while the Kings are off to one of the Western Conference’s best starts even without Carter and Gaborik, who is back in practice during his recovery from a knee injury. Blake said he is hopeful Gaborik will return to the Los Angeles lineup by early December.

Cammalleri is returning to Alberta after two earlier stints with the Calgary Flames. He spent the past three seasons with New Jersey.

Jokinen spent the last three seasons with the Florida Panthers. He has won two Olympic medals with Finland.

McGinn has nine goals and eight assists in 89 career NHL games with three teams, including Arizona in 2014-15.

Coyotes trade goalie Mike Smith to Flames

Associated Press
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes traded longtime starting goaltender Mike Smith to the Calgary Flames on Saturday for a conditional 2018 third-round pick, defensive prospect Brandon Hickey and the rights to unrestricted free agent goalie Chad Johnson.

As Calgary gets the starter it has been looking for, Arizona is now in the market for a new No. 1 in net after completing this deal prior to the NHL’s trade freeze for the Vegas expansion draft. Smith had been with the Coyotes for the past six seasons and helped them reach the 2012 Western Conference final.

They missed the playoffs each of the past five seasons, which Smith called “a battle.”

“I can’t really complain about my time in Arizona other than we kind of failed as far as the winning part of it,” Smith said in a phone interview. “That was my goal when I got there was to be a big part of a winning organization for a lot of years.”

Thanking Smith for his contributions in Arizona, Coyotes general manager John Chayka called the him “the consummate professional.” Last season he was 19-26-9 with a 2.92 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.

“Mike Smith is a 35-year-old goaltender,” Chayka said on a conference call. “When some of our players are reaching their prime years, then he’s probably on the wrong side of his career.”

In 11 seasons with the Coyotes, Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning, Smith has a 2.70 GAA and .913 save percentage. He has two years remaining on his contract at a salary-cap hit of $5.67 million.

The Coyotes can protect Johnson in the expansion draft, though there is no certainty about whether they’ll re-sign the 31-year-old or let him test the market July 3. Chayka said he’ll consider a variety of options to get a goaltender.

“With expansion, there’s a lot of unprotected goalies out there,” Chayka said. “Vegas doesn’t need 10. They only need a couple, and there’s opportunities for trades from that perspective.”

Hickey, 21, was a third-round pick of the Flames in 2014 and has played the past three seasons at Boston University.

Devils get defenseman Mirco Mueller from Sharks for picks

Associated Press
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Devils have acquired defenseman Mirco Mueller from the San Jose Sharks.

San Jose got a second-round pick, 49th overall, and a fourth-round pick, 123rd overall. The Sharks also sent their fifth-round pick, 143rd overall, to New Jersey.

The teams completed the deal just before the NHL’s trade freeze for the Vegas expansion draft.

Mueller spent most of last season in the minors and has six points in 54 career NHL games. The Sharks risked losing the 22-year-old player in the expansion draft for nothing. General manager Doug Wilson says this is an opportunity for Mueller to continue to develop.

The left-handed-shooting Swiss defender was the 18th pick in the 2013 draft.

Dallas Stars acquire rights to G Ben Bishop from LA Kings

By GREG BEACHAM
AP Hockey Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Dallas Stars acquired the rights to goalie Ben Bishop from the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday for a fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft.

Bishop will be an unrestricted free agent this summer unless Dallas signs him before July 1, but the Stars clearly hope to secure the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist as their new starting goalie.

"Ben has proven that he is one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL," Dallas general manager Jim Nill said. "This offers us the opportunity to negotiate with him before the free agency period begins."

Dallas split its playing time in net last season between Kari Lehtonen, who has been with the Stars since the 2009-10 season, and Antti Niemi.

Both goalies had unimpressive years while the Stars missed the playoffs, but both are under contract for next season at a combined $10.4 million. The combined buyouts for both goalies would be about $3.5 million.

The 6-foot-7 Bishop played just seven games after the Kings acquired him from Tampa Bay to play alongside Jonathan Quick. Since-fired Kings general manager Dean Lombardi engineered the trade to create an elite goaltending duo that would allow the Kings to rest Quick, who was returning from a major injury.

Los Angeles still failed to make the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. Bishop went 2-3-2 with a 2.49 goals-against average.

Bishop spent parts of the past five seasons with the Lightning, reaching the 2015 Stanley Cup Final. He finished second in the Vezina voting in 2016 after getting selected for the All-Star Game.

Bishop also has played for Ottawa and St. Louis.

He spent the 2004-05 season with the NAHL's Texas Tornado, playing in the same rink that holds the Stars' training complex in suburban Frisco.

Hurricanes Acquire Scott Darling from Chicago

RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired goaltender Scott Darling from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Ottawa's 2017 third-round draft pick. The Hurricanes will have exclusive negotiating rights with Darling until July 1, when he could become an unrestricted free agent.

"Scott had a very successful season in Chicago and was a big part of the Blackhawks finishing with the best record in the Western Conference," said Francis. "He played a critical role on Chicago's 2015 championship team."

Darling, 28, went 18-5-5, with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in 32 games played for Chicago in 2016-17. He recorded the decision in each of his career-high 27 starts (18-5-4), with his lone non-start decision coming as an overtime loss on March 21 against Vancouver after he entered a 4-1 game just moments into the third period. Darling's .924 save percentage in 2016-17 ranked tied for fourth among all NHL goaltenders who started more than 25 games.

Born in Newport News, VA, but raised in Lamont, IL, Darling (6'6", 232 lbs.) made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks on Oct. 26, 2015. In 75 career NHL games with Chicago, he has posted a 39-17-9 record, a 2.37 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. In 2015, Darling went 3-1 in five opening-round playoff appearances against Nashville, helping the Blackhawks win their first-round series en route to their third Stanley Cup championship in six years. Originally drafted by the Coyotes in the sixth round, 153rd overall, in the 2007 NHL Draft, Darling played two seasons at the University of Maine before turning professional. Before making his NHL debut, he played games at nearly every North American professional level, including the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), ECHL, Central Hockey League (CHL) and American Hockey League (AHL).
