Oilers place Talbot on injured reserve

Goaltender Cam Talbot was placed on injured reserve by the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday with an upper-body injury.

Talbot was injured during a 3-2 overtime win to the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday, Oilers coach Todd McLellan said Wednesday. Talbot finished the game and made 29 saves.

Talbot is 10-10-1 with a 3.00 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in 22 games, all starts. He finished fourth in Vezina Trophy voting last season after leading the NHL with 44 victories and 73 appearances, finishing with a 2.39 GAA.

He is eligible to return on Dec. 7.

The Oilers (10-13-2) are seventh in the Pacific Division after advancing to the Western Conference Second Round last season. They play the Toronto Maple Leafs at Rogers Place on Thursday (9 p.m. ET; TVA Sports, SNW, TSN4).

Edmonton called up goaltender Nick Ellis from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League. Ellis, 23, is 5-5-1 with a 2.82 GAA and .914 save percentage in 11 games.

Talbot turned aside 39 of 40 shots he faced as the Oilers left Anaheim with a 2-0 series lead. Talbot earned his fourth consecutive win and improved to 6-2 in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs overall.

SECOND STAR - VLADIMIR TARASENKO, F, ST. LOUIS BLUES

Tarasenko scored the go-ahead goal with 3:51 remaining in regulation as the Blues evened their series at 1-1.

THIRD STAR - RYAN ELLIS, F, NASHVILLE PREDATORS

Ellis recorded a goal and an assist in Nashville's Game 2 loss to St. Louis.

Allen, Talbot, Rinne named our 'Three Playoff Stars of the Week'

NEW YORK – The Neutral Zone has named Jake Allen, Cam Talbot, and Pekka Rinne their 'Three Playoff Stars of the Week' for the first week of the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs ending April 16.

FIRST STAR - JAKE ALLEN, G, ST. LOUIS BLUES

Allen turned aside 114 of 117 shots through the Blues' first three playoff games this week. So far in the playoffs in 2017, Allen has a 0.91 GAA, and a .974 SV%. In the first game on April 12, Allen made 51 saves on 52 shots faced (.981 SV%) in St. Louis' Game 1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. In Game 2 on April 14, Allen made 23 saves on 24 shots faced (.958 SV%) in the Blues' win, putting them up 2-0 in the series. In Game 3 on April 16, Allen made 40 saves in 41 shots faces (.976 SV%), giving the Blues another win and a 3-0 series lead against the Wild.

SECOND STAR - CAM TALBOT, G, EDMONTON OILERS

Talbot is 2-1-0 with a .98 GAA and a .964 SV% in three playoff games this season, all in the past week. He made 80 saves in 83 shots faced in the three games. Although he made 41 saves on 44 shots (.932 SV%) faced in Game 1 of Edmonton's first round series on April 12, Talbot earned shutouts in the next two games. He made 16 saves on April 14 in Game 2 for his first career playoff shutout, and 23 saves on April 16 in Game 3. With the shutout in Game 3, Talbot became the second Oilers goaltender to record a shutout in consecutive playoff games, joining Curtis Joseph in the 1998 conference quarter-final.

THIRD STAR - PEKKA RINNE, G, NASHVILLE PREDATORS

Rinne turned away all 59 shots faced through the Predators' first two playoff games this week. Rinne made 29 saves in Game 1 against Chicago on April 13, and then made 30 saves in Game 2 on April 15. Rinne became the first goalie to record 2 assists and a shutout in a playoff game since Tom Barrasso in Game 2 of the 1993 division semi-final against the New Jersey Devils.

Talbot looks to rewrite Oilers record book

Goaltender Cam Talbot tied Grant Fuhr last game for the Oilers record for most wins by a goaltender in one season (40), a record held by Grant Fuhr (1987-88). With one win Talbot will set a new Oilers record for most wins in a season by a goaltender.

Talbot has now appeared in an NHL high 70 games this season, and leads the NHL in minutes played (4,114), in saves (1,883) and third in wins (40). The Caledonia, ON native has set new career highs in all these categories in 2016-17.

Talbot also has seven shutouts this season, a new career high and is one shutout away from tying the Oilers single season record for shutouts (8) which was set by Tommy Salo in 2000-01. His seven shutouts are one behind the NHL leader, Braden Holtby (WAS), who has eight.

As an Oiler, Talbot now has 10 shutouts, putting him in sole possession of third place, one ahead of Grant Fuhr for most shutouts.

He also has a .919 save percentage since joining the Oilers, the best save percentage all-time for Oilers goaltenders with at least 100 games played with the organization.

Artemi Panarin leads '3 Stars of the Week'

NEW YORK - Chicago Blackhawks left wing Artemi Panarin, Washington Capitals left wing Marcus Johansson and Edmonton Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending April 2.

FIRST STAR - ARTEMI PANARIN, LW, CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

Panarin led the League with five goals in four games (5-1-6) to help the Blackhawks (50-22-7, 107 points) clinch first place in the Western Conference. Panarin began the week by notching one goal in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning March 27. On March 29, he recorded 1-1-2 in a 5-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins and followed with two goals in a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets March 31. Panarin finished the week with one goal in a 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins April 2. The 25-year-old native of Korkino, Russia, ranks second on the Blackhawks in goals and points (29-43-72 in 79 GP) and has eclipsed the 70-point mark in each of his first two NHL campaigns.

SECOND STAR - MARCUS JOHANSSON, LW, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

Johansson led the League in assists and points with 1-7-8 as the Capitals (52-18-8, 112 points) won three of four games to maintain their hold on first place in the overall NHL standings. Johansson began the week by notching four assists, including the primary helper on the game-winning goal, in a 5-4 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild March 28. On March 29, he tallied 1-1-2 in a 5-3 triumph over the Colorado Avalanche before posting two assists on March 31 in a 6-3 loss to the Arizona Coyotes. Johansson was held off the scoresheet in a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets April 2. The 26-year-old Landskrona, Sweden, native is in his seventh NHL campaign with Washington and has reached single-season career highs for goals (23) and points (56) in 2016-17

THIRD STAR - CAM TALBOT, G, EDMONTON OILERS

Talbot went 3-0-0 with a 1.66 goals-against average and .946 save percentage to help the Oilers (44-25-9, 97 points) earn victories against three Pacific Division rivals and clinch a postseason berth for the first time since 2005-06. Talbot began the week by stopping 34 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings March 28. On March 30, he made 38 saves in a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks and followed with 16 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory over the Anaheim Ducks April 1. The 29-year-old native of Caledonia, Ont., has appeared in a League-high 70 games for the Oilers while earning 40 wins for the first time in his career (40-21-8, 2.36 GAA, .921 SV%, 7 SO) to equal a single-season franchise record set by Grant Fuhr in 1987-88.

McDavid collected two assists and leads the NHL with 25-57—82 this season (72 GP).

THIRD STAR - KARI LEHTONEN, G, DALLAS STARS

Lehtonen made 30 saves to register the 36th shutout of his NHL career and backstop the Stars to a 1-0 victory.

Jaromir Jagr leads 3 Stars of the Week

NEW YORK -- Florida Panthers right wing Jaromir Jagr , Los Angeles Kings center Jeff Carter and Edmonton Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending Dec. 25.

FIRST STAR - JAROMIR JAGR, RW, FLORIDA PANTHERS

Jagr led the League with five assists in three games to move into second place in all-time NHL scoring (755-1,134-1,889 in 1,664 GP) and power the Panthers (15-14-6, 36 points) to three out of a possible six standings points. He registered his 252nd career three-point performance and 59th career three-assist game - in a 4-3 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres Dec. 20 - to tie Mark Messier (694-1,193-1,887 in 1,756 GP) for second place on the League's all-time points list. Jagr then collected one helper, in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins Dec. 22, to move past Messier and into sole possession of second place in all-time NHL scoring. He finished the week with another assist in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings Dec. 23. The 44-year-old Kladno, Czech Republic, native - who ranks second on the Panthers with 6-15-21 in 35 outings this season - also places third in NHL history in goals (755), fourth in games played (1,664) and sixth in assists (1,134).

SECOND STAR - JEFF CARTER, C, LOS ANGELES KINGS

Carter paced the NHL with five goals in three contests to lift the Kings (17-13-4, 38 points) to four out of a possible six standings points. He scored twice in regulation - and also found the back of the net in the shootout - during a 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets Dec. 20. Carter added one goal in a 4-0 triumph over the Nashville Predators Dec. 22 before capping the week with two more - his fifth multi-goal effort of the season - in a 3-2 overtime loss against the Dallas Stars Dec. 23. The 31-year-old London, Ont., native shares second place in the NHL with 19 goals and also leads the Kings with 29 points in 34 games this season.

THIRD STAR - CAM TALBOT, G, EDMONTON OILERS

Talbot went 2-0-1 with a 2.26 goals-against average and .926 save percentage to backstop the Oilers (18-12-6, 42 points) to five out of a possible six standings points. He made 25 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory against the St. Louis Blues Dec. 19, 34 stops in a 3-2 triumph over the Arizona Coyotes Dec. 21 and 28 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks Dec. 23. The 29-year-old Caledonia, Ont., native is tied for fourth place in the NHL with 17 wins in 32 appearances this season to go along with a 2.52 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and three shutouts.

Oilers sign Talbot to three-year contract extension

"The Neutral Zone" Roster Report

Goalie Cam Talbot signed a three-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday, the Oilers announced.

Financial terms were not released, but TSN reported Talbot's contract is worth $12.5 million with an average annual value of $4.17 million.

Talbot was in the final season of his current contract with a salary-cap charge of $1.45 million, according to war-on-ice.com, and could have been an unrestricted free agent after the season.
