Devils’ Cory Schneider making name for himself, and legacy in New Jersey

Cory Schneider is making himself known in New
Jersey.
If you asked any New Jersey Devils fan what they thought of the Cory Schneider trade that sent the goaltender to the Devils in 2013, you wouldn't get much results.

In the 2013-14 season where Schneider made his Devils debut, the Devils played an outdoor game against the New York Rangers. legendary NHL goaltender Martin Brodeur was given the start in net for the Devil in that game, but after giving up several goals in what wound up being a 4-3 Rangers win, Schneider was put in the game, where he too gave up quite a few goals.

But ever since arriving in New Jersey, Schneider went from bedng the backup goaltender for Brodeur in that 2013-14 season, Schneider has gone on to being an all-star starting goaltender for Newark, New Jersey’s NHL team.

“It's been a couple of years now and I feel very comfortable where I’m at,” Schneider told the Metro Newspaper. “I’ve shown people what I can do but now it is time to take that next step. It’s time to get in the playoffs and be a big difference maker in that sense. Maybe steal a playoff series or two and start producing some of those kinds of results.”

Schneider was an All-Star selection last season in 2015-16, and in 2016-17, he has helped the Devils reach 5-3-3 with 13 points in their first 11 games, as the team currently sits fourth in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division.

“It seems like every year it is a kind of jumble and then a couple of teams get on a run. We want that to be us, we want to be the team that starts banking wins and gets some distance between us because come March and April it’s really hard to make up ground. If you're playing catch-up it is really hard,” Schneider said at a signing event at Miami Mike's Sports Zone in conjunction with JAG Marketing.

The Devils haven’t reached the playoffs since the 2011-12 season, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final. But with Schneider back-stopping the Devils, they seem to be in prime position to make the playoffs this season, based on their impressive early-season performance.

“It is never easy replacing a guy like Marty and what he meant to this team, this area,” Schneider also told Metro. “But I’m hoping I can show people that I can do the job and I’m eager to get him to the next level.”
