New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad broke his left fibula when he fell awkwardly into the end boards 41 seconds into overtime in the Rangers' 3-2 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Sunday.
He will miss 6-8 weeks, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said.
The injury occured when Zibanejad's feet got tangled with Panthers forward Reilly Smith's feet and he fell awkwardly into the boards. His left foot jammed into the boards and it caused his leg to buckle.
Zibanejad gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 1:45 of the third period, but Ekblad scored 6:09 later on a shot from above the right circle that hit off of Rangers forward J.T. Miller.
"Every team has injuries and we don't expect to be any different than anybody else," Vigneault said. "Every coach says it in these moments, it's an opportunity for somebody else to get more ice time. We are confident with our guys, whoever we decide to put in that spot will do the job for us."
Zibanejad has 15 points in 19 games this season.
