NHL News and Notes: Carter scores in overtime for Kings

Jeff Carter scored the only goal of the contest at 2:35 of overtime as the Los Angeles Kings picked up their fifth consecutive win.

Carter paces the NHL with nine game-winning goals and a career-high four overtime goals this season.

Kings goaltender Peter Budaj registered his third shutout in his last four starts and leads the League with a career-high seven overall.

CAPS ARE 15-2-1 IN LAST 18

The League-leading @Capitals (35-11-6, 76 points) improved to 15-2-1 in their last 18 contests.

Nicklas Backstrom scored the game-winning goal and leads the Capitals with 15-37—52 this season (52 GP). 

Barry Trotz earned his 693rd career win to pass Dick Irvin (692) for sixth on the NHL’s all-time list among head coaches.

The Capitals improved to 12-0-2 in their last 14 regular-season road games vs. MTL dating to Nov. 28, 2009 (MTL: 2-10-2). 

NIETO HAS FIRST MULTI-GOAL GAME OF SEASON

Matt Nieto registered his first multi-goal game of the season to help the Colorado Avalanche snap a nine-game slide (0-8-1). 

MONTOUR GETS FIRST NHL GOAL

Brandon Montour of the Anaheim Ducks opened the scoring with the first goal of his NHL career (6 GP).

NYLANDER GETS FIRST HAT TRICK

William Nylander of the Toronto Maple Leafs scored the first hat trick of his NHL career.

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the only NHL seasons with two different Maple Leafs rookie scoring hat tricks are 1926-27 with Ace Bailey and Bill Carson and this season with William Nylander and Auston Matthews.

FOUR SKATERS SCORE FOR SABRES

Four different skaters scored as the Buffalo Sabres extended their home point streak to six games (5-0-!).

The Sabres improved to 5-0-2 in their last seven games vs. OTT dating to Jan. 26, 2016 (OTT: 2-5-0). 

HAINSEY HAS TWO-GOAL GAME

Ron Hainsey scored his second goal of the contest at 2:52 of overtime to guide the Carolina Hurricanes to their third consecutive win.

The Hurricanes improved to 5-0-2 in their last seven games vs. the Islanders dating to Feb. 28, 2015 (NYI: 2-3-2).

Before the game, the Islanders honored forward Jason Chimera, who skated in his 1,000th NHL game on Friday in Detroit.

GRANLUND EXTENDS POINT STREAK TO 12 GAMES

Minnesota's Mikael Granlund tallied his first career hat trick and four-point game to extend his franchise-best point streak to 12 games (5-12—17).

Granlund extended his point streak to 12 games (5-12—17), the longest in Wild history and the longest in the NHL this season.

BOYLE SCORES SHOOTOUT GOAL FOR LIGHTNING

Brian Boyle scored the decisive goal in the shootout to help the Tampa Bay Lightning snap a three-game slide (0-2-1).

The Lightning improved to 8-0-5 in their last 13 games vs. ANA dating to Jan. 9, 2009 (ANA: 5-7-1), including five consecutive home wins.

CROSBY BECOMES 3RD PEN TO RECORD 1,000 POINTS

Sidney Crosby had 2-1—3 to hit 30-goal mark and move within 3 points of becoming the third Penguins player to record 1,000 career points.
