GOLDEN KNIGHTS EXTEND HOME WIN STREAK TO SEVEN GAMES
William Karlsson scored twice in the first period – including a goal 55 seconds into the contest – to help the Golden Knights extend their home win streak to seven games. Elias notes that the Golden Knights became the second team in NHL history to win seven consecutive home games at any point in their inaugural season.
After honoring former players Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya for recently being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, John Gibson made 50 saves to backstop the Ducks to victory.
* Gibson registered his second career game with at least 50 saves (also 51 on Jan. 1, 2017 vs. PHI) to become the first goaltender in franchise history to record multiple 50-save performances. Only Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov (3) has produced more such outings among NHL goaltenders since Gibson made his League debut on April 7, 2014.
* Selanne collected 457-531—988 in 966 career games with Anaheim and is the franchise’s all-time leader in goals and points, while Kariya had 300-369—669 in 606 career contests with the Ducks.
Several players continued recent strings of success on Sunday:
* Nathan MacKinnon assisted on the game-tying goal with 45.2 seconds remaining in regulation and scored in overtime to power the Avalanche to a 10-8-1 (21 points) record this season. MacKinnon has collected 6-11—17 in his past nine games, including six multi-point performances.
* Teuvo Teravainen (2-1—3) and Sebastian Aho (1-2—3) each collected three points to help the Hurricanes improve to 5-1-1 in their past seven games. Teravainen has registered 5-5—10 in his last four contests, while Aho has scored in four consecutive outings (4-5—9).
* Henrik Lundqvist turned aside all 20 shots he faced to help the Rangers extend their home win streak to six games. Lundqvist improved to 7-2-0 in his past nine appearances dating to Oct. 31 (2.52 GAA, .921 SV%, 1 SO), including five straight wins at Madison Square Garden.
PENGUINS, FLYERS TO FACE OFF IN 2019 NHL STADIUM SERIES
The Flyers will play host to the Penguins outdoors at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, as part of the 2019 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series.
The Maple Leafs (14-7-0, 28 points) look to push their win streak to seven games when they host the Coyotes (4-15-3, 11 points) at Air Canada Centre. Toronto aims to earn at least seven consecutive wins for the first time since Nov. 22 – Dec. 6, 2003 (8-0-0).
* Frederik Andersen, who has recorded shutouts in his past two appearances (Nov. 16 vs. NJD and Nov. 18 at MTL), looks to join Lorne Chabot (Nov. 13-22, 1930) and Turk Broda (Oct. 18-25, 1950) as the only goaltenders in franchise history to post three straight shutouts.
* Auston Matthews is expected to skate in the 100th game of his NHL career. Matthews has scored 52 goals through his first 99 career games (52-38—90), the second-most in the NHL since making his League debut last season (Nikita Kucherov: 57).
GAUDREAU, LAINE AIM TO EXTEND POINT STREAKS
Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau (7-10—17 in 9 GP) and Jets forward Patrik Laine (6-3—9 in 8 GP) each aim to extend their career-high point streaks:
* Gaudreau looks to become the first Flames player to record at least one point in 10 consecutive team games since teammate Sean Monahan did so from Nov. 28 – Dec. 19, 2016 (5-7—12). Gaudreau ranks third in the NHL with 9-20—29 overall this season (19 GP).
* Laine looks to become the first Jets player to record at least one point in nine or more consecutive team games since teammates Blake Wheeler (8-8—16 in 11 GP) and Mark Scheifele (6-9—15 in 10 GP) posted concurrent streaks to end the 2015-16 season.
