BUFFALO -- Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel will miss at least a few weeks because of an ankle injury sustained on Wednesday.
"As we put out yesterday, Jack Eichel does have a moderate high ankle sprain," Sabres coach Dan Bylsma said after the team's morning skate on Thursday. "It's certainly more weeks than days at this point."
Eichel was replaced in the lineup by Ryan O'Reilly, who will center Evander Kane and Sam Reinhart, where Eichel would have skated.
The 19-year-old, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, led the Sabres in goals last season (24) and finished second in points (56) behind O'Reilly (60).
The Sabres open their season against the Montreal Canadiens at KeyBank Center on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; MSG-B, RDS, SN360, NHL.TV).
