The Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals combined for nine second period goals (PIT: 6, WSH: 3) including a hat trick by Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin (3-0-3), and both teams overcame multigoal deficits before Conor Sheary (2-1-3) scored 34 seconds into overtime as the Penguins beat the Capitals 8-7 to end their winning streak at nine games.
* The Penguins and Capitals were the first teams to combine for at least 15 goals in a game since the Winnipeg Jets beat the Philadelphia Flyers 9-8 on Oct. 27, 2011, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Penguins also scored six goals in a period for the first time since they scored six in the second period at the New York Islanders on March 21, 2000.
* Elias adds that the Penguins, who were behind 3-0 to start the game, became the second NHL team to overcome a three-goal deficit to end an opposing team's winning streak of at least nine games. They joined the Hartford Whalers, who rallied from a 5-1 deficit against the Montreal Canadiens on March 19, 1980 in an eventual 5-5 tie, ending the Canadiens' winning streak at nine games.
* The Penguins extended their home point streak to 13 games (12-0-1), including six consecutive wins. They leads the NHL in home wins (19) and points (40) this season.
* Sidney Crosby (1-3-4) had a season-high four points and leads the NHL with 27 goals this season. Crosby (27-23-50) also became the second player to reach the 50-point mark this season and is second in points behind the Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid (14-37-51).
* Malkin had his 11th NHL hat trick. Elias notes that he passed Kevin Stevens (10) for the second-most hat tricks in Penguins history, behind Mario Lemieux (40).
* Defensemen Justin Schultz (0-4-4) and Trevor Daley (0-3-3) each established NHL career highs for assists in a game.

BURNS (AGAIN) SCORES GAME-WINNING GOAL IN SHARKS VICTORY
Brent Burns scored the game-winning goal at 7:08 of the second period to lead the San Jose Sharks to victory and extend his Sharks record for most game-winning goals by a defenseman (15).
* Burns scored his fourth game-winning goal in 44 games this season to match his single-season NHL career high set in 82 games in 2007-08 and matched in 82 games in 2015-16. He has three goals and seven assist in his past six games and leads NHL defensemen in goals (18) and points (45) this season.
RED WINGS, ISLANDERS EARN SHUTOUT VICTORIES
The Detroit Red Wings and Islanders each won by shutout Monday:
* Jared Coreau made 18 saves for his second shutout of the season (also against the Los Angeles Kings on Jan. 5) to backstop the Red Wings to victory. Thomas Vanek scored to extend his point streak to six games (5-4-9).
* Thomas Greiss made 32 saves for his first shutout of the season and his fifth in the NHL to backstop the Islanders to a 4-0 win. The Islanders shut out the Boston Bruins in a road game for the first time.
LOOSE PUCKS
Jujhar Khaira, a third-round selection (No. 63) in the 2012 NHL Draft, scored the first goal of his NHL career, in his 17th game, to help the Oilers win their third consecutive game. … The Tampa Bay Lightning got their first road win against the Kings since a 3-1 victory Jan. 12, 2009, ending a four-game losing streak (0-4-0). … Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel scored two goals and has 10 in 22 games this season. … Jets forward Mark Scheifele (1-1-2) reached the 20-goal mark for the second straight season. … Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom (1-0-1) extended his point streak to seven games (4-9-13). … Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (3-6-9) and Lightning forward Jonathan Drouin (2-4-6) each extended their point streak to five games. … Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom, Bruins left wing Brad Marchand and Carolina Hurricanes left wing Brock McGinn were named the NHL "Three Stars" for the week ending Jan. 15. … Hockey pioneer Willie O'Ree dropped the ceremonial first puck as part of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day ceremony prior to the Kings-Lightning game at Staples Center.
