Patrick Marleau scored four times in the third period, including his first three in a span of 7:42, to tie the NHL record for goals in a period and propel the San Jose Sharks to their fifth consecutive victory, a 5-2 defeat of the Colorado Avalanche.
* Marleau became the 12th player to score four times in a single period and the first to do so since the Pittsburgh Penguins' Mario Lemieux at the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 26, 1997.
* Marleau became the third player this season to score four goals in a game, joining Auston Matthews (Oct. 12 at OTT: 4-0-4) and Max Pacioretty (Dec. 10 vs. COL: 4-1-5). Two others in Sharks history have accomplished the feat: Owen Nolan (Dec. 19, 1995 at ANA: 4-1-5) and Tomas Hertl (Oct. 8, 2013 vs. NYR: 4-0-4).
* Marleau, who had his fifth NHL regular-season hat trick and first since Nov. 20, 2011 (also at COL), moved within three goals of 500 in the NHL (497-563-1,060 in 1,459 GP).
* Marleau scored his 96th NHL game-winning goal to move into a tie with Mats Sundin for 10th place in NHL history. Two active players have more such goals: Jaromir Jagr (134) and Jarome Iginla (97).
ENTERTAINMENT LINEUP GROWS FOR 2017 HONDA NHL ALL-STAR WEEKEND
The NHL announced that pop superstars Nick Jonas, Fifth Harmony and Carly Rae Jepsen will perform at the 2017 Honda NHL All-Star Game at Staples Center on Sunday, joining a lineup of performers and special guests for the 2017 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend that includes John Legend, Robin Thicke, John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting, as well as THE NHL100 presented by GEICO host Jon Hamm.
* Details for 2017 NHL Fan Fair, the official fan festival of 2017 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend at Los Angeles Convention Center from Jan. 26-28, also were announced.

CAPITALS FILL THE NET (AGAIN) TO PUSH POINT STREAK TO 14 GAMES
The Carolina Hurricanes opened the scoring, but the Washington Capitals responded with six unanswered goals to extend their point streak to 14 games (12-0-2) and become the first team to reach 70 points this season (32-9-6, 70 points).
* The Capitals' 14-game run is tied for the second-longest point streak in franchise history, behind a 15-game stretch from Jan. 13 - Feb. 10, 2010 (14-0-1), according to the Elias Sports Bureau. They also own home win and point streaks of seven and nine games (8-0-1), respectively.
* Washington has outscored opponents 65-28 during its point streak, including a 36-11 margin in eight games at Verizon Center.
* Andre Burakovsky (0-3-3) established NHL career highs for assists and points in a game to push his point streak to six games (4-6-10), while Dmitry Orlov (2-0-2) had his second NHL multigoal game (also March 2, 2014 vs. PHI).
* Nicklas Backstrom (4-13-17) and Alex Ovechkin (4-9-13) each had assists to extend their point streaks to 10 and eight games, respectively. Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and an assist to pick up points for a fifth straight game (2-5-7).
TRIO OF PLAYERS REACH 20-GOAL MARK, HELP TEAMS TO VICTORY
Sharks defenseman Brent Burns, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri and Anaheim Ducks forward Rickard Rakell all hit the 20-goal plateau in victories Monday:
* Burns (1-2-3) had his third three-point game of the season to become the fourth player to reach 50 points this season (20-30-50 in 48 GP). Elias notes that Burns, who has played in each of the Sharks' 48 games this season, became the first defenseman to score 20 or more goals in 48 team games since the Capitals' Kevin Hatcher in 1992-93 (20 in 48 GP). In 2015-16, Burns set NHL career highs and Sharks records for goals (27), assists (48) and points (75) in a season by a defenseman.
* Kadri scored twice, including his 100th NHL goal, and Frederik Andersen (26 saves) recorded his second shutout of the season as the Maple Leafs improved to 10-2-2 in their past 14 games. Kadri scored his 19th and 20th goals of the season (45 GP) to match an NHL career high established in 2013-14 (78 GP). Andersen, meanwhile, reached the 20-win mark for the fourth time in as many NHL seasons.
* Rakell scored his 20th goal of the season and captain Ryan Getzlaf (1-1-2) scored the game-winning goal to lift the Ducks to a 9-2-1 mark in January. Rakell, who has played 39 games this season, equaled his career high of 20 goals set in 2015-16 (72 GP).

Elias notes that forward Christian Fischer (1-0-1) became the first player in Arizona Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets history to score in each of his first two NHL games. … New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello scored the game-winning goal to help the Rangers win their third straight while extending his point streak to six games (1-7-8). … Maple Leafs rookie Mitchell Marner (11-28-39) had a goal and an assist to surpass teammate Auston Matthews (22-16-38) for the NHL rookie scoring lead. … The Rangers' Alain Vigneault became the 18th coach in League history, and seventh active, with 1,100 games. … Jets forward Mark Scheifele (0-1-1) extended his point streak to five games (2-5-7). … The Ottawa Senators signed forward Zack Smith to a four-year contract. … Pittsburgh Penguins forward Conor Sheary, New York Islanders goaltender Thomas Greiss and Capitals forward T.J. Oshie were named the NHL Three Stars for the week. … The NHL announced it has commissioned artist Tony Harris to paint original portraits of each member of the 100 Greatest NHL Players presented by Molson Canadian, unveiling the first two paintings of legends Dave Keon and Ted Lindsay.
