Recaps of last night's NHL games

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jeff Carter scored with 2:10 left in overtime and the Los Angeles Kings blew a three-goal lead in the third period before rallying for a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Vincent Lecavalier, Jake Muzzin and Milan Lucic scored in a dominant first period for the Kings, who reclaimed the Pacific Division lead from Anaheim with their seventh victory in nine games.

T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom and Dmitry Orlov scored in the third for the NHL-leading Capitals, who awoke from two somnolent periods for a furious finish. Braden Holtby stopped 26 shots in Washington's second loss in six games.

After both teams had golden overtime chances, Carter scored on an exceptional cross-ice pass from Lucic to end a thriller between two Stanley Cup contenders.

AVALANCHE 3, DUCKS 0

DENVER (AP) — Semyon Varlamov stopped 37 shots, Nathan MacKinnon got his 21st goal and Colorado beat Anaheim 3-0 Wednesday night to end the Ducks' 14-game point streak.

Andreas Martinsen and Shawn Matthias also scored to help the Avalanche earn a critical win. They're in a heated race with Minnesota for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

The Ducks have now dropped two straight for the first time since December and ended a six-game road winning streak.

Anaheim goaltender John Gibson had a rare off night. He entered tied for the league-lead with a 2.04 goals-against average, but stopped just 23 of 26 shots.

Colorado has outscored Anaheim 6-0 in two meetings this season.

BLUES 3, BLACKHAWKS 2, SO

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kevin Shattenkirk scored the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout to lift St. Louis over Chicago for its fourth straight win.

David Backes and Troy Brouwer scored in the third period for the Blues and Jake Allen stopped 33 shots through overtime to earn his 22nd win of the season. Patrik Berglund and Troy Brouwer also had goals in the tiebreaker.

Andrew Ladd scored in the second period and Artemi Panarin tied it late in the third for the Blackhawks, who fell to 32-0-3 win leading after two periods. Corey Crawford had 28 saves.

Panarin and Artem Anisimov scored in the shootout for the Chicago.

Chicago pulled into a tie with Dallas for first place in the Central Division, though the Blackhawks have the tiebreaker with 40 regulation and overtime wins. The Blues are a point behind.

FLAMES 3, PREDATORS 2, OT

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Johnny Gaudreau scored twice 10 seconds apart in the first period, then set up Mikael Backlund's winner in overtime to lead Calgary over Nashville.

Joni Ortio finished with 24 saves for the Flames, who improved to 1-0-1 on a six-game homestand.

Anthony Bitetto got his first career goal and Mike Fisher also scored for Nashville. Carter Hutton stopped 31 shots.

Gaudreau has a career-high 66 points, including 23 goals and 25 assists at home.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, ISLANDERS 3, SO

TORONTO (AP) — William Nylander scored the tying goal late in regulation and Nikita Soshnikov had the only goal of the shootout to lift Toronto past the New York Islanders.

Zach Hyman and Morgan Rielly also scored in regulation and Garret Sparks stopped 24 shots for the Maple Leafs, who had lost six straight (0-5-1) — including the last five by one goal.

John Tavares, Nick Leddy, and Ryan Strome scored for the Islanders, and Thomas Greiss finished with 33 saves. New York snapped a four-game winning streak and fell to 11-2-2 in its last 15.

Strome gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead with 5:19 remaining in the third period.

Nylander, who scored his second goal in only his sixth NHL game, knocked in a rebound past Greiss for the tying goal with 1:13 left in regulation.

CANUCKS 3, COYOTES 2, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Markus Granlund scored 1:42 into overtime to help Vancouver beat Arizona.

Radim Vrbata and Luca Sbisa also scored for the Canucks. Jacob Markstrom stopped 32 shots for Vancouver.

Kevin Connauton and Tobias Rieder scored for the Coyotes, who have lost nine of their last 10 games. Louis Domingue made 28 saves.
