NEW YORK (AP) — Justin Williams scored 4:16 into overtime to lift the Washington Capitals over the New York Islanders 3-2 on Thursday night.
Alex Ovechkin scored twice in a 1:27 span early in the second period and Braden Holtby stopped 20 shots for the Capitals to get his league-leading 36th win of the season. The Capitals beat the Islanders for the third time in three meetings this season and ninth in the last 12 (9-1-2).
Washington, which leads the NHL with 88 points, won for the fifth time in six games and improved to 15-3-2 against Metropolitan Division teams.
John Tavares and Frans Nielsen scored goals and Thomas Greiss had 32 saves for the Islanders, who had won four of their previous five. New York snapped a four-game home winning streak and will play 12 of its next 14 on the road.
BLUES 2, KINGS 1, OT
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaden Schwartz scored 1:40 into overtime, Brian Elliott was sharp again in goal and St. Louis beat Los Angeles.
Robby Fabbri scored a power-play goal in the first period for St. Louis and Elliott made 34 of 35 saves as he improved to 11-3-3 since Jake Allen was injured on Jan. 8.
Tyler Toffoli scored for the Kings, who have lost three straight.
The Blues improved to 9-2-1 against teams from the Pacific Division, have won four straight and have points in their last six games.
Fabbri scored on a give-and-go with Jori Lehtera with 10 seconds left in the Blues' first power play at 11:32 of the first period. The man advantage was created when Kings goalie Jonathan Quick was called for tripping.
COYOTES 6, STARS 3
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Maxi Domi had two goals and an assist, linemate Anthony Duclair had three assists and Arizona beat Dallas at its own game.
The Coyotes scored a season-best six goals for the second straight game, racing past the NHL's top-scoring team to win consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month.
Domi scored both his goals in the second period, sandwiched around one by Michael Stone. Martin Hanzal scored to open the third, Tyler Gaudet added his first NHL goal and Antoine Vermette capped it with an empty-netter.
Louis Domingue made some highlight-reel stops among his 36 saves to help the Coyotes hold off the hard-charging Stars.
Tyler Seguin had his 31st goal, Jamie Benn notched his 30th and Ales Hemsky also scored for Dallas.
PENGUINS 6, RED WINGS 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Phil Kessel scored twice, Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist and Pittsburgh got plenty of help from other players in a 6-3 win over Detroit.
Matt Cullen added a goal and an assist, Ben Lovejoy picked up his first goal since November and Scott Wilson collected the first goal of his career for the Penguins. Pittsburgh never trailed and picked up two valuable points while trying to keep pace in the jumbled Eastern Conference playoff race.
Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 35 shots, and Pittsburgh improved to 7-1 in its last eight home games.
Rookie Dylan Larkin boosted his team-leading goal total to 19 for Detroit. Tomas Jurco and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for the Red Wings, who struggled defensively for a third straight game. Petr Mrazek made 27 saves but Detroit has given up 11 goals combined in his last two starts.
RANGERS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2
TORONTO (AP) — Derek Stepan scored with 1:31 remaining and Derick Brassard added an empty-netter for his second goal of the game to lift New York over Toronto.
Stepan's one-time goal came 59 seconds after Colin Greening tied it with his first goal as a member of the Leafs.
Toronto's leading scorer Leo Komarov was ejected after elbowing Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh in the head during the first period. McDonagh returned from a concussion Wednesday night after missing four games and sat the rest of this one as a precaution, the team said.
Mats Zuccarello had a goal and two assists and J.T. Miller had three assists for the Rangers. Antti Raanta made 35 saves.
Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau also scored for the Leafs. Jonathan Bernier stopped 16 shots.
SHARKS 2, PANTHERS 1, SO
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Joe Pavelski scored the winning goal in the shootout and San Jose beat Florida for its third straight victory.
Joonas Donskoi also scored in the shootout for the Sharks. Nick Bjugstad had a shootout goal for Florida, but San Jose's Martin Jones stopped Jussi Jokinen in the third round to seal it.
Logan Couture scored in the third period for the Sharks, and Jones stopped 19 shots.
Jaromir Jagr scored for the Panthers. Al Montoya made 16 saves in his first back-to-back start of the season.

Jannik Hansen and Sven Baertschi scored for Vancouver, and Ryan Miller stopped 28 shots. The Canucks dropped their third in a row — all at home — to fall to 0-5-1 over their last six at Rogers Arena. Daniel Sedin added two assists.
The Ducks are 18-4-2 since Christmas and sit just two points behind the Los Angeles Kings for first in the Pacific Division after starting the season 1-7-2.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Steven Stamkos scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Tampa Bay rebounded after blowing a three-goal lead to beat Winnipeg.
The Lightning won the shootout 2-1.
Tampa Bay got regulation goals from Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Jonathan Marchessault, Alex Killorn and Nikita Kucherov.
Andrew Ladd had two goals for the Jets, who trailed 4-1 early in the third. Tyler Myers, Mark Scheifele and Mathieu Perreault had the other Winnipeg goals.
PREDATORS 2, BRUINS 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Pekka Rinne made 29 saves, Filip Forsberg had a goal and an assist and Nashville beat Boston.
Craig Smith had the other goal and Mike Ribeiro had two assists for Nashville, which has won of two of three.
The Bruins have lost two of three. Tuukka Rask made 22 saves.
Seeing his first action in nearly a week, Rinne was sharp throughout. He made his best save 8:39 into the second when he denied Brad Marchand's deflection from just outside of the crease. The shutout was Rinne's third of the season and 39th of his career.
Carter Hutton started Nashville's previous two games and got a win and an overtime loss.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Matt Dumba, Thomas Vanek and Mikael Granlund each had a goal and an assist and Minnesota beat Edmonton to win its third straight under interim coach John Torchetti.
Jason Pominville and Charlie Coyle scored for the Wild, and Darcy Kuemper made 31 saves. Minnesota had lost 13 of 14 games under former coach Mike Yeo before his firing Saturday night.
Connor McDavid and Nail Yakupov scored for the Oilers, and Cam Talbot had 22 saves. Edmonton has lost three straight and six of its last seven games.
Minnesota started the scoring 10 1/2 minutes in on the power play when a big rebound came out to Pominville, who ripped a shot past Talbot.
